Sabrina Carpenter is First Lehigh Valley Native to Win a Grammy Award

The pop star won the awards for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album.

On Sunday, singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter became the first Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania native to ever win a Grammy Award for performance.

Carpenter grew up in Lower Milford Township and was nominated for six Grammys in November. She was nominated for all “Big Four” categories, including Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. She is one of only 14 artists to receive all “Big Four” category nominations in just one year.

Her six Grammy nominations this award season were her first Grammy nominations of her career. She won the awards for Best Pop Solo Performance for her chart-topping single “Espresso”, and Best Pop Vocal Album for “Short n’ Sweet”. Carpenter also performed a medley during the awards broadcast Sunday evening.

In her acceptance speech for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Espresso”, she said, “I really wasn’t expecting this. This is, woo, my first Grammy so I’m going to cry.”

“Espresso” was released in April and has sold five times platinum. Her single “Please Please Please” sold double platinum and hit No. 1. Earlier this year, Carpenter had three songs in the Top 5, making her the first woman and only act other than The Beatles to have three Top 5 hits in the same week.

Although Carpenter is the first Lehigh Valley native to win a performance Grammy, other artists from the area have received nominations over the years.

Jazz piano player Keith Jarrett of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was nominated in 2011 for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for his song “Body and Soul”. His 1975 disc “The Koln Concert” sold more than 3.5 million copies and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for being the best-selling solo album in jazz history.

Jazz singer Denise Donatelli, also of Allentown, was nominated three times for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2015, 2012, and 2011.
