Despite more than 10 million illegal immigrants entering the U.S. since Biden entered office, Wild voted against ensuring none of them would be able to vote in the 2024 election.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives voted on a spending bill that also included the SAVE Act, which would amend federal law to require proof of citizenship for those registering to vote in federal elections.
All House Democrats, including Rep. Susan Wild (PA-7), voted against the bill. The bill ultimately failed after a handful of Republican representatives also voted “nay” as a protest against government spending.
Wild previously voted against reinstating the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy and called a border wall “silly.” Earlier this year, Wild’s views on border security changed when she wrote an op-ed calling the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border a “crisis”. The opinion piece followed a letter she co-signed urging Biden to take executive action on the border.
Before Wild’s change of heart, she voted against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his poor handling of immigration and the southern border.
According to experts, the number of illegal immigrants in the United States doubled under President Biden, with at least 10 million having entered the country illegally since Biden took office.
Despite not being a border state, Pennsylvania is not immune to the problems associated with the surge of illegal immigrants. The small town of Chambersburg, PA is in turmoil over a proposal to house “hundreds of migrant families” in an abandoned school. Local residents, with support from elected officials oppose the plan, arguing it was not possible to vet those being housed. One resident said “we don’t know where they came from. We don’t know if they’re involved in gangs. We don’t know if they’re drug traffickers, sex traffickers.”
