Wawa ranked #1 with fellow Pennsylvania convenience chain Sheetz finishing in 6th place.
While the age-old Pennsylvania debate pitting Wawa vs. Sheetz will most likely never end, Wawa did just receive a significant leg up.
The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), conducted its 2024 Convenience Store Study where they took a randomized selection of customers and asked them to rank different chains on a scale of 100 points across various categories including convenience of store hours and locations, coffee freshness, food quality, wait times, and checkout times. The survey was conducted over seven months running from March to September 2024 and Wawa came out on top with a score of 82/100, narrowly beating out QuikTrip who scored an 81.
“Convenience stores are no longer just a quick stop for gas and snacks — they are becoming serious competitors in the food service industry,” said Forrest Morgeson, Director of Research Emeritus at the ACSI in a press release. “The top-performing convenience store brands are now on par with fast food chains in terms of food quality and variety, offering customers a wide range of fresh, gourmet options. By focusing on the in-store dining experience, while maintaining the speedy service that customers have grown accustomed to, convenience stores may have found the perfect recipe for success.”
Many of the respondents gave Wawa high marks for its food quality, pointing to the chain’s hoagies in particular as what kept them coming back.
In addition to Wawa receiving the top ranking, the ACSI listed the top 10 scoring convenience store chains by customer voting:
- Wawa (82 points)
- QuikTrip (81 points)
- Buc-ee’s (80 points)
- Murphy USA (80 points)
- Casey’s General Stores (79 points)
- Sheetz (79 points)
- Kwik Trip (78 points)
- BP (77 points)
- Cumberland Farms (77 points)
- Speedway (77 points)
More Pennsylvanians will now have access to the top-ranked Wawa as the company is expanding further across the State. Wawa opened its first Dauphin County location on September 19th and has plans to open up more locations across central Pennsylvania in the coming months.
