Rappers and athletes came together to knock on doors and register city voters.
Sixers legend Allen Iverson, former Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick, and rappers Jadakiss, Killer Mike, and Beanie Siegel teamed up on Thursday night for a voter turnout event in support of Kamala Harris for President.
The main event was a ‘Vote or Else’ town hall at Temple’s Liacouras Center which was headlined by Allen Iverson with help from Vick and performances by the attending rappers. Before the event, the organization held a Muslim Community Engagement Forum and then canvassed across West Philadelphia and North Philadelphia to register voters.
The event was organized by ‘Vote or Else’ consisting of three smaller groups, the Black Church PAC, AAP, and Mobilize Justice, founded by Beanie Sigel’s close friend and fellow Philly native Marvin Bing.
“There’s two people at the top of the ticket, and there’s very stark differences between them,” said Bing, “We wanted to put together a cultural response of credible messengers, cultural leaders, community leaders,” he continued.
Sigel has been involved in various get-out-the-vote events across the country – including one on National Voter Registration Day on September 17th in Detroit -after deciding to get more involved in the political process this past summer.
“I’ve lived a very colorful past, where I haven’t always done good in the neighborhood,” said Siegel at a recent event. “This is a chance for me to not only do some good for the people, but for myself, as well.”
Siegel made waves last month when he opened a food truck called Grab & Roll, Wings & Bowls in Philly. In a video posted to social media, the local rapper could be seen cooking up grub with fellow rapper Jadakiss and mixing it up with Vick.
