District Attorney Larry Krasner questions legality of Musk’s giveaway.
Elon Musk has been summoned to a Philadelphia court hearing following a lawsuit filed by District Attorney Larry Krasner regarding Musk’s $1 million giveaway to voters. The hearing, set for 10 a.m. today at City Hall, is the latest development in a case that raises questions about election integrity.
Judge Angelo Foglietta of the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas mandated the presence of all parties involved. Krasner’s lawsuit claims that Musk and his associated super PAC are attempting to unduly influence the upcoming presidential election between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“The Philadelphia District Attorney is charged with protecting the public from public nuisances and unfair trade practices, including illegal lotteries. The DA is also charged with protecting the public from interference with the integrity of elections,” Krasner stated when announcing the complaint.
Musk recently pledged to distribute $1 million daily until Election Day on November 5, contingent upon voters signing a petition in support of the First and Second Amendments.
Legal experts voiced concern at Musk’s approach. Adav Noti, executive director of the Campaign Legal Center, expressed concerns, “The actions that we’re seeing … it violates federal law pretty clearly. Actually, I don’t think it’s a particularly close call.” Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also voiced his apprehensions regarding Musk’s financial contributions to the race, describing them as “deeply concerning.”
