NYPD continued the manhunt for the man that shot and killed the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. A suspect has been taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
On Wednesday, a man fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and fled. After leaving the scene of the shooting, the man rode a bike into Central Park and exited the park without his backpack. NYPD divers were seen investigating the lake in Central Park for evidence.
He was last seen on surveillance footage entering the bus station in New York City, but did not exit the station. This led authorities to believe he took a bus out of the city. A massive manhunt for the suspect occurred in the days that followed, with the FBI offering $50,000 as of Friday for information leading to an arrest.
On Monday, a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania alerted authorities after noticing a customer resembled the suspected Manhattan gunman. This tip led to the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, who carried a gun similar to the one used in the shooting and handwritten documents expressing anger towards corporate America.
The suspect was being held on gun charges in Pennsylvania. He will be extradited to New York to face charges relating to Thompson’s death, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
Mangione had a ghost gun at the time of his arrest. A ghost gun can be assembled in one’s home and is difficult to trace. At the time of his arrest, Mangione was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs and a U.S. passport. He had a sound suppressor that was “consistent with the weapon used in the murder”, according to Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Mangione was born and raised in Maryland. He has ties to San Francisco, and his last known address is in Honolulu. He was the valedictorian of his Maryland prep school. He earned an undergraduate and graduate degree in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania.
