The President and First Lady barnstormed Pennsylvania on the second anniversary of the overturning of Roe v Wade. Polling shows Biden’s lead with women has shrunk since 2020.
With the latest polls between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden tightening, the Biden campaign is stepping up its outreach to suburban women in swing states, notably Republican women in the collar counties around Philadelphia. Right leaning and anti-Trump Republican groups are helping Biden with outreach to this crucial voting bloc, which went for Biden 60%-40% in the 2020 election.
So far, the efforts to connect with Republican women are a tough sell according to the Associated Press which found “little evidence that traditional Republicans were ready to abandon Trump.”
Coinciding with the second anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade, the President and First Lady Jill Biden spoke at separate campaign events in Pennsylvania, focusing on abortion and “tangible issues that could impact their day-to-day lives.” The campaign hopes that focus on abortion can motivate female voters to vote for Biden according to CNN.
Biden’s lead with female voters versus Trump has shrunk considerably since this time in 2020 when he led by 13 points, compared to just 8 points now. The New York Times also notes Black and Hispanic women are turning from Biden in swing states Arizona and Michigan at a greater rate than white women. Polling shows that while the Biden campaign wants to focus on abortion, economic issues are still very important to female voters.
Conservative pundits are also contrasting the difference in the Biden administration’s actions in addressing anti-abortion protestors and the alleged police protection of protestors who turned violent at a Los Angeles synagogue this past weekend.
Online pro-life outlets are predicting the focus on abortion will continue to fall flat, noting polling shows 3 out of 4 women polled believe in some restrictions on abortion. Recent conservative editorials have criticized Biden for “aggressive and unprecedented application” of federal legislation preventing “the use of force that is used to interfere with access to abortion clinics.”
The enthusiasm gap is evident in the same poll, with only 83% of females having supported Biden in 2020 committing to do the same in 2024, compared to 92% of females supporting Trump again.
