Pennsylvania’s newest residents are coming to the Commonwealth from the Northeast and the South.
New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that Pennsylvania’s population has grown from July 2024 to July 2025.
As of July 1, 2025, the Bureau estimated that Pennsylvania has 13,059,432 residents. This estimation was up by 13,584 residents from the previous year.
States to the Northeast and the South were the leading states with movers to Pennsylvania in 2024.
New Jersey sent the newest residents to Pennsylvania, with 38,467 movers. New York followed with 29,274 movers. Florida took third place for the most movers to Pennsylvania during 2024 at 25,048.
Behind the top three states that saw the most residents move to Pennsylvania over the course of 2024 were Maryland, Ohio, California, Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, and Delaware.
Some of those states were also the top destinations for residents moving out of Pennsylvania. Florida claimed 33,530 movers, with New Jersey, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, Maryland, Ohio, California, and South Carolina following.
In 2025, census data shows that Pennsylvania was the fifth-most populous state behind California, Texas, Florida, and New York.
Pennsylvania’s overall estimated population of 13,059,432 residents is also up from its 2020 pandemic total of 13,002,753. Other states lost residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In terms of county populations, analysis shows which counties contributed to population growth, and which have struggled to attract new residents.
From 2023 to 2024, Philadelphia County saw the most population growth with 10,567 net residents gained.
Montgomery, Chester, York, and Lehigh Counties followed close behind in population growth in the Commonwealth.
Fayette, Cambria, Greene, Westmoreland, and Erie County saw the greatest population decline over the same period.
