Shapiro hits the campaign trail with speculation mounting that Pennsylvania’s Democrat Governor is a top contender to join the ticket.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro took a short drive up the turnpike from the State Capital in Harrisburg to Rendezvous Run Farm in Carlisle to stump for the newly-minted Democratic presidential frontrunner Kamala Harris.
With Sunday marking 100 days until the election, the Harris campaign targeted this weekend as a ‘Day of Action’ across the country. Surrogates like Governor Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and the Vice President herself were at events in key states including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire.
In his nearly 20-minute remarks before the crowd of a few hundred ‘Harris for President’ volunteers, Shapiro tore into Republican nominee Donald Trump. He positioned him as an enemy of democracy who would bring 4 years of chaos with him into office, and focused on his record on abortion lashing out at how “he packed the Supreme Court, and they ripped away our fundamental freedom.”
Shapiro also stressed his good relationship with Vice President Harris, saying they have been cordial. “I knew her when she was a courtroom prosecutor. And let me tell you something, she is tough as nails,” said the Governor.
He wrapped his stump speech discussing Harris’s efforts to fight “big banks” and “big pharmaceutical companies” while she was Attorney General of California.
The rally for Vice President Harris comes amid rumors that Governor Shapiro is a top candidate to join the ticket. Vice President Harris immediately began to consolidate support for the Democratic nomination with President Biden leaving the race and the questions turned to who her running mate could be. Josh Shapiro quickly rose to the top of the list for potential Harris running mates, with reports naming him as one of three finalists along with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.
Harris picking Governor Shapiro as her running mate would most likely be a play for Pennsylvania and its 19 electoral votes in November. Recent polling from Emerson shows Trump with a 2-point lead over Harris in Pennsylvania, but the same poll conducted before Biden dropped out had Trump up 5 points over the sitting President. Josh Shapiro currently holds an 18% net approval rate with Pennsylvania voters
