After a disastrous ending to the 2023 campaign, changes were always in store for the 2024 Eagles Organization.
With 2023 ending the way it did, it would have been no surprise to see Owner Jeffrie Lurie and General Manager Howie Roseman clean house on the coaching staff. While they chose not to by bringing back head coach Nick Sirianni, dramatic changes were made to the rest of the staff.
Nick Sirianni, who led the team to the Super Bowl just two seasons ago, returns to the team with plenty of question marks. The team fell off a cliff last season on both sides of the ball with the offense looking stale, an all-pro quarterback in Jalen Hurts unable to read a simple blitz, and a defense that ranked near the bottom of the league in most metrics.
The Eagles hired former Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to breathe some life into what was a stagnant Eagles offense; if fans watching on TV didn’t know what play the Eagles were about to run, the opposing team certainly seemed to. The hallmarks of Moore’s system, motion at the line, movement, lots of formations, and lots of surprises, are exactly what this team and quarterback Jalen Hurts should need.
The Eagles technically fired two defensive coordinators this offseason if the departure of Sean Desai who was demoted in favor of Matt Patricia midseason last year is counted. Pennsylvania native Vic Fangio joins Nick Sirianni’s staff hoping to revitalize the 26th-ranked Eagles defense. Fangio, 66, has overseen elite defensive units in Denver, Chicago, and Carolina and has also served as a head coach. The Eagles in years past have run a defensive scheme modeled after Fangio’s and now they have his expertise on staff
And while the coaching staff will look almost completely different, so will a lot of the players on the field.
Major Additions
- Draft Picks of Note
- Quinyon Mitchell – Cornerback
- The Eagles were the 28th-ranked coverage unit last season and looked to bolster that early with the addition of Quinyon Mitchell out of Toledo who led all players in PFF grade the last two college seasons.
- Cooper DeJean – Cornerback
- DeJean was a lockdown corner at Iowa and thought of as a first-round talent. The Eagles get a solid player and great value after he fell to the Birds at pick 40 in the second round.
- Jeremiah Trotter Jr. – Linebacker
- The son of Eagles legend Jeremiah Trotter Sr. Trotter Jr. was selected in the 5th round and looks to immediately slot into an Eagles linebacker corps in desperate need of additional talent.
- Quinyon Mitchell – Cornerback
- Free agent signings
- Saquon Barkley – Running Back
- One of GM Howie Roseman’s biggest offseason moves was signing the all-pro running back away from the NFC East rival New York Giants. The 6-0, 233 lb former Penn State standout joins a Philadelphia backfield in desperate need.
- Chauncey “C.J.” Gardner Johnson – Safety
- A staple in the secondary during the Birds’ run to the Super Bowl in 2022, CJGJ returns in free agency after a successful run with the Detroit Lions last year.
- Bryce Huff – Defensive End
- The Eagles made an early splash in free agency signing Huff away from the New York Jets. He is coming off a career year in which he registered 10 sacks and added 10 tackles for loss and 21 quarterback hits, but he has yet to play a majority of snaps in a season and was unproven before last year.
- Saquon Barkley – Running Back
- Trades
- Jahan Dotson – Wide Receiver
- While the wide receiver duo of A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith are as good as any in the League, question marks were all that remained behind them on the depth chart. GM Howie Roseman answered those questions in a big way, swinging a trade for the uber-talented former Penn State receiver from NFC East rival Washington.
- Jahan Dotson – Wide Receiver
Notable Subtractions
- Jason Kelce – Center – Retired
- What more is there to say about this legendary Eagle than this:
- D’Andre Swift – Running Back – Free Agency
- The Birds lost their leading rusher from last year after he inked a deal to join the running back committee in Chicago.
- Hasson Reddick – Edge – Trade
- Arguably the best defensive player on the Eagles the past two seasons, Reddick was traded to the New York Jets this offseason for a 2026 conditional 3rd-round pick. Reddick has since been in a holdout with the Jets over his below-market value contract and he is no guarantee to play a single snap this season.
