Following the first presidential debate, several polls show Donald Trump with a lead over President Biden in Pennsylvania.
Democratic voters and lawmakers grappled with the future of their party following President Biden’s performance at the first presidential debate this month. According to a majority of different polls, Biden’s odds plummeted as Trump gained a clear lead.
Immediately after the debate, a national poll that previously had the candidates just about tied showed Trump with a 1.4 percentage point lead over Biden.
In Pennsylvania, a recent poll shows Trump holding a four-point lead over President Biden. Cygnal and Trump 2020 pollster Brock McCleary said in a statement, “Trump turned the Keystone State red in 2016 but Biden was able to flip it back to blue in 2020, meaning Pennsylvania is likely to determine the next President.”
Recent data also shows Biden with a 74.5% unfavorable rating, compared to Trump having a 61.9% unfavorable view. Democratic lawmakers are becoming increasingly concerned about Biden’s candidacy.
A leaked poll from progressive nonprofit Open Labs shows the severity of Biden’s situation. The poll, conducted in the 72 hours immediately after the debate, found that 40% of Biden voters in 2020 believe he should end his 2024 campaign. By a 2-to-1 margin among swing voters in the United States, many believe Biden should exit the race. The Open Labs document shows that support for alternative democrats, such as Harris and Newsom, is higher in battleground states.
Despite facing criticism for his debate performance, President Biden remains firm in his decision to stay in the race.
