With President Biden avoiding public events following his disastrous debate performance last week, his closest advisor, Dr. Jill Biden, made the latest campaign swing through the Keystone State.
Dr. Biden was in the Lehigh Valley on Tuesday at Lehigh Carbon Community College as part of an event promoting the White House education initiative. The First Lady was on campus to discuss education and workforce development across the region, while touting her experience as a former community college professor.
Teaching isn’t just what I do. It’s who I am,” said Biden.
Biden was joined by Pennsylvania Congresswoman Susan Wild and U.S. Reps. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., and Nanette Barragan, D-Calif., both members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus which helped to organize the event.
Following remarks, the First Lady held a roundtable discussion on education and the workforce with local elected officials.
The visit comes as post-debate polling shows President Biden down to Trump both nationally and in critical battleground states including Pennsylvania. The performance has high-ranking officials growing uneasy about Biden’s future as the Democratic nominee and the First Lady’s role as the President’s biggest defender.
The debate was a subject the organizers made efforts to avoid, with Rep. Wild declining to comment on President Biden’s performance last Thursday and whether he should step down quipping, “not talking politics today.” A member of the audience asked Dr. Biden what she thought of her husband’s poor debate performance last Thursday, but she did not respond.
Roughly two dozen protestors in political gear and holding various pro-Trump signs gathered outside the event, according to reporting from the Morning Call. They gathered to voice their displeasure with Rep. Susan Wild and President Joe Biden and to “tell them that we’re tired of the lies from the Biden administration.”
Following the First Lady’s departure, Rep. Susan Wild and other local officials met for an event at the Allentown Arts Park to welcome members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to the area.
