Montgomery Co. Mom of Three Seeks to Take Down PA-4 Incumbent

Incumbent Rep. Madeleine Dean faces a potentially competitive race against a local mom as the GOP fights to maintain its House majority.

Pennsylvania’s 4th Congressional District, centered in the suburbs northwest of Philadelphia, is gearing up for a competitive race as voters weigh sharply different visions for the region’s future.

The district encompasses most of Montgomery County and part of Berks County, with a population of more than 780,000 and a six-figure median household income, making it one of the more affluent districts in the state. The district has favored Democrats in recent years, but Republicans see the region as a potential window to flip a House seat and stabilize the GOP’s tenuous majority.

Incumbent Rep. Madeleine Dean, a Democrat who has represented the district since 2019, is seeking to maintain her hold on the seat. Dean previously served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and aligned closely with the Biden administration’s agenda, voting along party lines throughout the 117th Congress. Her sponsored legislation has largely focused on standard Democrat platform tenets like tighter gun regulation.

An attorney by trade, Dean was appointed to help manage impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump in 2021. Dean has remained an outspoken critic of the Trump administration, notably evidenced by a February opinion piece published in Newsweek in which she harshly condemns then-Attorney General Pam Bondi. In the article, Dean compares Bondi’s “performance” to that of Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show.

Dean wrote that Bad Bunny’s halftime show was “large and warm—arms outstretched, drawing others in, singing of love, celebrating his beautiful Puerto Rican culture—celebrating our diverse culture.” She adds by contrast that “Ms. Bondi’s performance this week was bad: dismaying, disqualifying, dangerous. Peevish and small. A cover up.”

Dean’s public engagement has included speaking at recovery program events highlighting addiction awareness, an issue she has shared is personal to her family due to her son’s recovery from addiction.

As of now, Dean’s only known opponent in the race is GOP candidate Aurora Stuski. According to the Montgomery County GOP, Stuski is a Philadelphia native and mother of three with a track record of political engagement.

“The impact the Covid Lockdowns had on my children launched me into full Mama Bear mode and back into the political arena,” Stuski is quoted as saying in a social media post. She adds that she is passionate about pivotal issues like education and election integrity.

Dean’s opponents contend that her voting record reflects priorities that are out of step with more moderate or conservative constituents in the district. While past GOP candidates have faced an uphill climb in the district, recent election results suggest a base of support that could be expanded with the right messaging. In 2024, Dean won reelection with just over 59% of the vote, while her Republican opponent received roughly 41%, indicating a competitive electorate.
